How to Use 会 and 能 in Mandarin: The Difference Explained with Real-Life Examples
One of my students once asked me:
老师,你现在能游泳吗?
He knew I was taking swimming lessons, but I still couldn't swim without a float.
What he meant was:
“Can you swim now?”
“Have you learned how to swim yet?”
In this situation, a more natural question would be:
老师,你现在会游泳了吗?
or
老师,你学会游泳了吗?
This is a good example of why 会 and 能 can be confusing for English-speaking learners.
Both can sometimes be translated as “can,” but they don't always mean the same thing.
A useful way to think about the difference is:
-
会 often means you know how to do something or have learned a skill.
-
能 often means you are able to do something in a particular situation.
Let's look at some real-life examples.
会: Knowing How to Do Something
会 often focuses on a skill that you have learned.
For example:
我会说中文。
I can speak Chinese.
你会开车吗?
Can you drive?
她会做饭。
She can cook.
我会游泳。
I can swim.
So when my student asked:
老师,你现在能游泳吗?
If he wanted to ask whether I had learned how to swim, 会 would be more natural:
老师,你现在会游泳了吗?
Can you swim now?
or:
老师,你学会游泳了吗?
Have you learned how to swim?
The focus is on whether I have learned the skill.
能: Being Able to Do Something in a Particular Situation
能 often focuses on whether you are able to do something because of the current situation or circumstances.
For example:
我今天不能去。
I can't go today.
你明天能来吗?
Can you come tomorrow?
You may know how to do something, but still not be able to do it at a particular time.
For example:
我会开车,但是今天不能开车。
I can drive, but I can't drive today.
Or:
我会游泳,但是今天不能游泳。
I can swim, but I can't swim today.
There is no contradiction here.
会 describes the skill you have learned.
不能 describes whether you can do it in the current situation.
So, Is “你现在能游泳吗?” Wrong?
Not necessarily.
If you already know that someone can swim, but you want to know whether they can swim right now, then:
你现在能游泳吗?
is perfectly natural.
For example, maybe they hurt their leg, or they are sick, or something else is preventing them from swimming.
But if you are asking whether someone has learned how to swim, then:
你现在会游泳了吗?
or:
你学会游泳了吗?
is more appropriate.
This is an important difference: the same English word “can” can correspond to different Chinese words depending on what you mean.
能 Can Also Be Used to Ask for Permission
能 can also be used when asking whether something is possible or allowed.
For example:
我能进来吗?
Can I come in?
我能坐这里吗?
Can I sit here?
我能用你的电脑吗?
Can I use your computer?
You can also use 可以:
我可以进来吗?
Can I come in?
我可以用你的电脑吗?
Can I use your computer?
In many situations, 能 focuses a little more on whether something is possible or whether the circumstances allow it, while 可以 often sounds more like asking whether something is allowed or acceptable.
But the two overlap quite a bit in everyday Chinese.
不能 vs. 不会
This is another useful difference to remember.
Compare:
我不会游泳。
I can't swim. / I don't know how to swim.
and:
我今天不能游泳。
I can't swim today.
The first one is about a skill you haven't learned.
The second one is about the current situation.
The same applies to driving:
我不会开车。
I can't drive. / I don't know how to drive.
我今天不能开车。
I can't drive today.
What About 可以?
可以 is very common when talking about permission or whether something is acceptable.
For example:
我可以进来吗?
Can I come in?
你可以用我的电脑。
You can use my computer.
这样可以吗?
Is this okay?
明天可以吗?
Is tomorrow okay?
In everyday Chinese, 能 and 可以 often overlap, especially when asking whether something is possible or allowed.
会 Can Also Talk About the Future
There is one more meaning of 会 that beginners should know.
会 can also express a future expectation or prediction:
明天会下雨。
It will rain tomorrow.
他今天会来。
He will come today. / I expect him to come today.
The negative form is:
明天不会下雨。
It won't rain tomorrow.
This is different from the 会 meaning “know how to.”
For example:
他不会来。
I don't think he'll come. / He won't come.
But:
他不能来。
He can't come.
The first is about an expectation or prediction. The second is about his ability or circumstances.
A Few Common Mistakes
1. Talking about something you have learned
❌ 我能说中文。
This isn't necessarily wrong, but when you are simply saying that you know how to speak Chinese, 会 is usually more natural:
我会说中文。
I can speak Chinese.
2. Talking about a current situation
我会说中文,但是今天不能说话。
This makes sense if, for example, you have lost your voice or cannot speak for some reason today.
3. Don't think of 会 and 能 as completely separate
The difference isn't always absolute. Native speakers can use both depending on the context and what they want to emphasize.
The most useful starting point is:
-
会 → you know how to do something / you've learned the skill
-
能 → you are able to do something in a particular situation
-
可以 → something is allowed or acceptable; sometimes overlaps with 能
-
会 → can also express a future expectation
Quick Practice
Choose 会 or 能.
-
你 ___ 开车吗? -
你今天有工作,所以 ___ 去上课。 -
她 ___ 说三种语言。 -
老师,你现在 ___ 游泳了吗?
Answers
-
会 — asking about a learned skill
-
不能 — talking about the current situation
-
会 — talking about a learned ability
-
会 — asking whether the skill has been learned
The more you hear these words in real conversations, the easier the difference becomes.
Next time you're about to speak, pause for half a second and ask yourself:
“Am I talking about whether I know how to do something, or whether I'm able to do it right now?”
A lot of the time, that half-second can help you choose the right word.
